Her Story
Laurie Chapman is a 5th generation farmer, born and raised in the rolling hills of Greene County, Virginia. Both of her parents grew up on the family farm and continued to farm as adults, passing along their knowledge and values to Laurie. She learned the rhythms of agriculture directly from her parents and grandparents, developing a deep appreciation for the land, the animals, and the hard work it takes to sustain both. Over the years, farming practices have evolved, and Laurie has embraced change by attending producer meetings and farming seminars, ensuring her methods honor tradition while keeping pace with innovation. Today, AlPat Farms raises Angus cattle, fruits, vegetables, flowers, and hay — always with a focus on sustainability, humane care, and respect for the land.

Laurie’s path to full-time farming was anything but linear. She spent 23 years as a real estate broker before following her culinary passion, inspired by her grandmother Pearl’s farmhouse kitchen. In her honor, Laurie founded Pearl’s Bake Shoppe in Richmond, VA, which became a beloved destination for scratch-made treats and warm hospitality. After 12 years of sweet success, she sold the bakery and, in 2022, returned fully to her roots — carrying forward her family’s farming legacy at AlPat Farms, named for her parents.

Outside of the pasture and gardens, Laurie is a mother of three grown children who enjoys reading, gardening, history, travel, art, and all things culinary. She often spends her free time cooking or baking for friends, painting, or exploring nature with her dog, Bingham, by her side. She loves sharing the farm’s history and beauty with guests, blending her heritage as a farmer with her gift for hospitality. For Laurie, farming is more than a livelihood — it is both her heritage and her passion.
